Key takeaways

  • Our clinic near BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit offers a rapid 4th-generation HIV test, with results in about an hour.
  • You can test anonymously: a first name is enough, and you are seen in a private room.
  • Timing matters. A test today shows your status from a few weeks ago, not from last night.
  • If the possible exposure was in the last 72 hours, ask about PEP first, before you think about testing.
  • We are open every day from 09:00 to 21:00, with English- and Thai-speaking doctors.

Where can I get an HIV test in Bangkok?

If you need an HIV test in Bangkok, you can get one at our clinic in the Sukhumvit area, close to BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit. We use a rapid 4th-generation test, and you usually have your result in about an hour.

Hospitals and other clinics across the city also test for HIV. What matters most is choosing the right test for the time since any possible exposure.

Had a possible exposure in the last 72 hours? Think PEP first

An HIV test cannot show whether something in the last few days has infected you. If a condom broke, you had sex without one, or you shared needles within the last 72 hours, the urgent question is PEP, not testing.

PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medicines that can stop an infection from taking hold, and it works best when started within hours. Read how PEP works and who needs it, or check your situation with our quick PEP self-check and 72-hour calculator.

What to do based on when the exposure happened

Your situation What to do
Exposure in the last 72 hours Come in for PEP; you will have a baseline HIV test at the same visit
Exposure 3 days to a few weeks ago Test now for a first answer, then repeat after the window period
Exposure more than 3 months ago One test gives a reliable answer for that exposure
No particular event, just a routine check Test now, and ask whether regular testing or PrEP suits you
You have finished a course of PEP Follow your post-PEP testing plan

For a detailed timeline, see our guide on when to test for HIV after a possible exposure. If you have just finished PEP, read HIV testing after PEP and what your results mean.

Rapid HIV test cassette on a clinic table, the kind of test that gives a result in about an hour
A rapid 4th-generation test looks for both HIV antibodies and an early part of the virus called p24 antigen.

Which HIV test is right for you?

Not all HIV tests are the same. They look for different signs of the virus, and each has its own window period: the time after an exposure before the test can reliably pick up an infection.

HIV test types compared

Test type What it looks for Best suited to
Rapid 4th-generation test Antibodies and p24 antigen A quick, reliable answer once the window period has passed
Laboratory antigen/antibody test Antibodies and p24 antigen Confirming results and some follow-up plans
RNA (PCR) test The virus’s genetic material Specific situations a doctor recommends, not routine screening
Home self-test Usually antibodies only Privacy at home, with a longer window period

People often ask for an HIV PCR test in Bangkok because it detects the virus earlier. Most people do not need one, and it is no substitute for PEP. Your doctor will explain whether it would change anything in your case.

Anonymous HIV testing in Bangkok: what it means

Many people put off testing because they worry about who will find out. Here, you can test anonymously: a first name is enough.

Anonymous and confidential are not quite the same thing:

  • Anonymous means your result is not linked to your full identity.
  • Confidential means your details are kept private and not shared without your permission.

Every visit is confidential, and you are seen in a private room.

What happens during a rapid HIV test at our clinic

  1. Get in touch or arrive. Contact us by LINE, WhatsApp, phone or the booking form, or come to the clinic.
  2. A private chat. The doctor asks, calmly and without judgement, about any recent exposure and its timing.
  3. The test. A small blood sample is taken for the rapid 4th-generation test.
  4. Your result. Most people have their result in about an hour, explained face to face.
  5. Next steps. You leave knowing whether you need a repeat test, and when.

You can add a screen for other infections at the same time. Our same-day STI testing in Bangkok covers syphilis, hepatitis B and C, gonorrhoea and chlamydia.

HIV test at a clinic, hospital or at home: how they compare

Choose the option that fits your timing, language and privacy needs.

Private clinic vs public hospital vs home self-test

Option Strengths Things to consider
Private sexual health clinic Quick results, evening and weekend hours, doctor on hand You pay for the visit
Public hospital or community clinic Low-cost or free testing for people who are eligible Waiting times, limited hours, eligibility rules for foreigners vary
Home self-test Complete privacy Longer window period, no doctor, a reactive result still needs a clinic

Searches for a free HIV test in Bangkok for foreigners are common. Thai public programmes do offer free or low-cost testing, but who qualifies can change, so check directly with the service before you go.

What your HIV test result means

A negative (non-reactive) result

A negative result means no HIV was found. If you had a possible exposure within the window period of the test, you will need a repeat test later to be sure, and the doctor will tell you when.

A reactive result

A reactive rapid test is not a diagnosis on its own. As the World Health Organization explains in its HIV fact sheet, no single test gives a full positive diagnosis, and confirmatory testing is always needed.

If HIV is confirmed, modern treatment is highly effective. People on treatment with an undetectable viral load live long, healthy lives and do not pass HIV on through sex.

Regular HIV checks, PrEP and travel

If you have a new partner, more than one partner, or you do not always use condoms, regular testing is a sensible habit. If you are often at risk, HIV PrEP in Bangkok can protect you before any exposure happens. Our comparison of PEP and PrEP and which one you need explains the difference.

Frequently asked questions about HIV testing in Bangkok

How long does a rapid HIV test take at your clinic?

Most people have their result in about an hour, including a short private chat with the doctor before the test and an explanation of the result afterwards.

Can I test for HIV the day after a possible exposure?

You can, but the result will only reflect your status from before that exposure. If it happened within the last 72 hours, ask about PEP first; you will have a baseline test at the same visit.

Is a home self-test as reliable as a clinic test?

Self-tests are useful, but most detect antibodies only, so they have a longer window period. A reactive self-test always needs a clinic test to confirm it.

What if my rapid test is reactive?

The doctor will explain what it means, arrange confirmatory testing and stay with you through the next steps. A reactive rapid test on its own is not a diagnosis.
